Since 1970
Fifty-six years. Never once relegated.
Formed in Enugu in the months after the civil war, Rangers became the side the East rallied behind. This is the club in its own photographs — the titles, the lean years, and the long way back.

Chapter 2 — The Founding
Where it began
Rangers International Football Club was formed in Enugu in 1970, after the Nigerian Civil War. In a region rebuilding almost from nothing, the club became something the East could gather around.
Chief Jerry Enyeazu founded the club and led it from 1970 to 1973. In its very first year the side won a nationally organised tournament that carried it into the 1971 African Cup of Champions Clubs, where ASEC Mimosas ended the run in the quarter-final. Godwin Achebe was the first captain, and Ernest Ufele was among the founding Rangers.

Chapter 3 — The Golden Era
1974 – 1984
The golden era
Eleven seasons that made the name. Six league titles, five FA Cups, and an African trophy brought home to Enugu — built on internationals like Christian Chukwu, Emmanuel Okala, Aloysius Atuegbu and Luke Okpala.

The first double
A first league title, and the FA Cup with it after a 2 – 0 final against Mighty Jets. The players were given cars and promotions at the Nigerian Sports Council.

Champions again, and a continental final
The league and cup were both retained, and Rangers overturned a 3 – 1 semi-final defeat in Egypt to reach the African Cup of Champions Clubs final, lost to Hafia FC of Guinea.

A third FA Cup in a row
Alyufsalam Rocks of Ilorin were beaten 2 – 0 in the final.

African Cup Winners’ Cup
Managed by their first captain, Godwin Achebe, Rangers won 2 – 1 away to ASF Police in Dakar, came through a semi-final against Shooting Stars, then beat Canon Yaoundé 5 – 2 on aggregate — 4 – 1 on Nigerian soil. A league title followed the same year.

Another double, the cup won 2 – 0 against Bendel Insurance.

The fifth league title
Back-to-back championships for the second time.

Chukwu’s cup
With Christian Chukwu now coaching, Rangers held DIC Bees of Kaduna to 0 – 0 and won the final 5 – 4 on penalties.

The sixth
Captained by Louis Igwilo, with players who had led Nigeria to the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations. It would be the last title for thirty-two years.
Chapter 4 — The Lean Years
1985 – 2015
Holding on
Three decades without a league title, and five FA Cup finals lost between 1987 and 2007. Through all of it Rangers stayed in the top flight — the record that still sets the club apart.

Into the professional league
Rangers joined the new fully professional league and reached the cup final again, beaten 5 – 4 on penalties by Stationery Stores.

A Coca-Cola FA Cup final
Beaten 1 – 0 by Niger Tornadoes.

Top of the table
First after the home-and-away season, before a four-team championship play-off went against them.

Africa, and another final
The CAF Confederation Cup group stage, missed out on a head-to-head tiebreaker against Asante Kotoko — and an FA Cup final lost 1 – 0 to Dolphin.

A first for Nigerian football
Rangers became the first Nigerian club to go public and offer shares. The deal later fell through, and the club is owned by the Enugu State government.

A season that came close to relegation, and did not end in it.
Chapter 5 — The Return
2016 – 2026
The long way back
A decade that ended thirty-two years of waiting, brought the cup back to Enugu, and took the league title count from six to nine.

The jinx is broken
A year after nearly going down, Rangers went into the final day needing to win. They beat El-Kanemi Warriors 4 – 0 and were champions for the first time since 1984.

Still never relegated
In the drop zone at the halfway point, the side recovered to finish fourteenth.

From 3 – 0 down
The first FA Cup in thirty-five years. Ajani Ibrahim’s diving header two minutes into stoppage time made it 3 – 3 against Kano Pillars, and Rangers won on penalties.

Fidelis Ilechukwu is unveiled as head coach in July.

The eighth
Forty-four thousand watched Enyimba visit the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the best crowd of the NPFL season. On 16 June a 2 – 0 win over Bendel Insurance sealed the title with a game to spare.

The ninth
On 24 May, away at Ikorodu City, a Nwobodo brace won it 2 – 1 — sixty-eight points to Rivers United’s sixty-seven.
